Match report against The Midland Golf Union.

On the 28th of September we played nine holes of foursomes in the morning and The Midlands got off to a fast start in the top match with three birdies in the first 4 holes, meaning in a 9-hole sprint it was difficult for our first pair of Nick Barwood and Steve York to make a comeback.

This was a familiar story throughout the foursome’s play, where you only get the chance to make one or two errors and it almost eliminates you from the game. During the practice round we familiarised ourselves with the course, but the main element of defence was its greens which were extremely sloppy and contoured with tiers which made putting and distance control an essential part of play and it became evident that the matches were going to be won or lost on the greens.

However, Tony Coles and Gary Earl had a fine win against Charlie Banks and Phil Gray, so we entered the singles in the afternoon 4/1 down.

I have to pay our team absolute credit for the fight back in the afternoon led by Jeremy Tomlinson playing top of the order with a fine win of 2 and 1 against Steve Samson. Michael White narrowly lost 1 down and Gary Earl undefeated in the match won 3 and 1 against Dave Westward.

At one point the match looked extremely close with The Midlands senior captain pacing up and down nervously, watching the players with intense scrutiny however they prevailed in the end with the singles result 6 and 4 with the overall match result 10/5.

I must congratulate the team in their fight back in the singles, it was close with three matches going to the 18th and two matches decided on putts narrowly missed, it could have been a much closer contest. However, the Midlands captain was generous with his support of our players and with the match being played in great spirit and extremely competitive. It was a pleasure to watch the match from the side lines as our team battled and I’m really proud of how they played their part in this inaugural match.

Everyone connected with this match really enjoyed the occasion and we look forward to next years event and hopefully will seek our reversal of fortune.

It only leaves me to wish Wiltshire the very best of luck for the County Finals, which will also take place at Rothley Park Golf Club.
